Last night, as I was waiting outside the hospital, there were two people, a man and a woman, getting on bicycles outside the ER. They turned on their flashing red brake lights and rode off. When they were about a block away from me, one of them rang their bicycle bell. The other one rang back, then there was about a 5-second interlude where they were laughing and ringing at each other, red lights blinking. I thought of fireflies, flashing and swooping about, I thought about how love transforms things. It was a beautiful and unexpected gift at the end of a long shift.
