Gagnon’s works are populated by characters and symbols that shapeshift into secretive figures, their faces blending together. Bodies rise from the concrete only to dissolve into the indefinite endings and un-endings of hidden images. People lurk in the ink and acrylic, their eyes pleading for meaning in a world that offers none. A wanting, a loneliness, runs through these figures—left to rebuild their cities and their lives from the ashes of failure and lost opportunities.

Matt Gagnon is an Ottawa-based visual artist / musician. He has been painting in the figurative abstract style for 30 years, using acrylics, inks and collage techniques. Gagnon’s works evolve as they are painted, with each brush stroke comes a new idea until the piece is finished.
