Fiji Robinson
Saskatoon, Saskatchewan

Scrapbook find

I lost my dear friend, writer/director/song writer/producer Peter McGehee in 1991 to AIDS. I was his singing partner, and he was my “sister with a difference.” Recently, while going through his papers and documents for a memoir/scrapbook I am creating of those 10 years we were “family,” I found that most of the postcards he’d sent me over the years invariably involved a canine of some sort. It didn’t really surprise me because Peter loved dogs. But he also enjoyed cute boys, so when I found the cut-out of this appealing guy in the mix, I pondered who he was and what was his significance.

That’s until I turned it over and found this glamorous poodle on the other side and wondered “who came first”?!

Fiji Robinson

In 1981, at the tender age of 26, the straight, impressionable, and unsuspecting Fiji Robinson survived the gin and tonic audition that began her 10-year odyssey as a “sister with a difference” in American Peter McGehee’s irreverent gay musical revues, The Quinlan Sisters and The Fabulous Sirs. With the support of SK Arts, Fiji is currently producing a scrapbook memoir entitled, Lick! Shoot! Suck! centering on McGehee and Canadian gay activist Douglas Wilson, her “chosen family.” These two gay icons dedicated their lives to changing the world through creativity, hard work, and exhausting play. The titillating title refers to taking a shot of tequila, a well-known practice in the Quinlan family circle. Always followed by a rousing version of the Mexican Hat Dance, the results were simply staggering!
